According to the Bible, how much you need to be able to endure. Biblical symphony based on the books of the Old and New Testaments. What is patience

What is humility? Not everyone can answer this question unequivocally. Despite this, many consider humility to be the main virtue of a true Christian. It is this quality that the Lord values most in a person.

Some may have the impression that human humility leads to poverty, oppression, depression, poverty, and illness. They humbly endure their current situation and hope for a better life in the Kingdom of God. In fact, all this is far from humility. The Lord sends us difficulties not so that we put up with them, but so that we overcome them. Belittling one's own dignity, stupid humility, oppression and depression are rather signs of false humility.

And yet, what is humility?

Biblical humility. An Example of Humility

The Bible Encyclopedia says that humility is pride. This virtue is considered one of the main ones in Christianity. The humility of a person lies in the fact that he relies on the mercy of the Lord in everything and clearly understands that without Him he cannot achieve anything. A humble person never puts himself above others, with joy and gratitude he accepts only what the Lord gives him, and does not demand more than he is entitled to. prescribe this virtue to all true followers of Christ. Jesus showed the highest degree of humility by submitting completely. For the sake of all mankind, He endured terrible suffering, humiliation and money-grubbing. He was crucified, but after the resurrection He did not even have the slightest resentment against those who did it, since He realized that all this was God’s work. In other words, a person’s Christian humility is manifested in his complete dependence on the Lord and in a realistic view of his essence. As a result of this, a true understanding comes that one should not think highly of oneself.

What is the essence of humility?

What is humility? Spiritual leaders are asked this question all the time. They, in turn, give different understandings of this definition, but the essence is the same for all. Some argue that humility consists in the fact that a person immediately forgets about the good deeds he has done. In other words, he does not take credit for the result. Others say that a humble person considers himself the worst sinner. Some say that humility is a mental recognition of one's powerlessness. But these are far from complete definitions of the concept of “humility.” More accurately, we can say that this is a grace-filled state of soul, a real gift from the Lord. Some sources speak of humility as the Divine robe in which the human soul is clothed. Humility is the mysterious power of grace. There is another definition of humility, which says that it is a joyful, but at the same time sad self-abasement of the soul before the Lord and other people. It is expressed by inner prayer and contemplation of one’s sins, complete submission to the Lord and diligent service to other people.

Humility in life gives a person joy, happiness and confidence in Divine support.

How does dependence on the Lord manifest itself?

Two components in a person’s life give an understanding of the concept of “humility”. The first meaning is dependence on God. How does it manifest itself? There is an example in the Scriptures where the Lord calls a rich man “a fool.” Legend has it that once upon a time there was a rich man who had large reserves of grain and other goods. He sought to further expand his opportunities for greater accumulation, so that later he could only enjoy his wealth. But the Lord called him a “madman” because he chained his soul in slavery to his wealth. The Lord told him what he would do with this accumulated wealth if today he lost his soul? A bad fate awaits those who hoard goods for their own pleasure and not for the Lord. The modern situation of rich people is such that they want to undividedly enjoy their wealth, believing that they have achieved everything themselves, and that the Lord has nothing to do with it. These are real crazy people. No amount of wealth can protect a person from difficulties, suffering and illness. such people are completely empty, and they have completely forgotten about God.

Bible story

There is another story that teaches humility. One day the Lord invited a rich, pious young man to give all his wealth to the poor and go with Him in order to have real treasures in the Kingdom of Heaven. But the young man could not do this because of his attachment to property. And then Christ said that it is very difficult for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God. His disciples were amazed at this answer. After all, they sincerely believed that human wealth is, on the contrary, God’s blessing. But Jesus said the opposite. The fact is that material prosperity is indeed a sign of the Lord's approval. But a person should not become dependent on his wealth. This quality is the exact opposite of humility.

Truthfulness to yourself

The power of humility increases if a person adequately evaluates himself and puts himself in the right position. In one of the verses of the Holy Scriptures, the Lord calls people not to think highly of themselves. You need to think about yourself modestly, relying on the faith that the Lord has endowed all people with. You should not be arrogant towards others and you should not dream about yourself.

Most often, a person looks at himself through the prism of his achievements, which automatically causes a manifestation of pride. Material measures such as the amount of money, education, position are not the means by which a person should evaluate himself. All this is far from talking about one’s spiritual situation. You should know that it is pride that deprives a person of all divine graces.

The Apostle Peter compares humility and a modest attitude towards oneself to beautiful clothes. He also says that the Lord does not recognize the proud, but bestows His grace on the humble. The Scriptures mention the word “humility of mind,” which emphasizes modesty of thought. Those who exalt themselves and think that they represent something without connecting it with the Lord are in the greatest error.

Take everything as it comes

Humility is the ancestor of responsibility. The heart of a humble person accepts any situation and tries to solve it with all responsibility. A person with humility is always aware of his Divine nature and remembers where and why he came to this planet. Humility of the soul means complete acceptance of the Lord in your heart and awareness of your mission, which is to continuously work on your qualities. Humility helps a person to sincerely serve the Lord and all living beings. A humble person sincerely believes that everything that happens in this world happens according to the Divine will. This understanding helps a person to always maintain peace and tranquility in his soul.

In dealing with other people, a humble person never evaluates, compares, denies or ignores the nature of another person. He accepts people as they are. Full acceptance is a conscious and attentive attitude towards another. It is necessary to accept everything as it is not with the mind, but with the soul. The mind constantly evaluates and analyzes, and the soul is the eye of the Lord himself.

Humility and patience are very close concepts, but still have different interpretations.

What is patience?

Throughout life, a person has to experience not only joyful experiences. Difficulties also come into his life that he must first come to terms with. These difficulties cannot always be overcome in a short time. This is what patience is needed for. Humility and patience are the true virtues that the Lord himself endows a person with. It is sometimes said that patience is necessary in order to control negativity. But it's not right. A patient person does not hold anything back, he simply accepts everything calmly and even in the most difficult situations maintains clarity of mind.

Jesus Christ himself showed true patience. Also, Christ the Savior is a real example of true humility. For the sake of a higher goal, He endured persecution and even crucifixion. Has he ever been angry or wished harm on anyone? No. Likewise, a person who follows the commandments of the Lord must meekly endure all the difficulties on his life’s path.

How is patience related to humility?

What humility and patience are was described above. Are these two concepts related? There is an inextricable connection between patience and humility. Their essence is the same. A person is at peace and also feels peace and tranquility inside. This is not an external manifestation, but an internal one. It happens that outwardly a person seems calm and satisfied, but inside he is raging indignation, dissatisfaction and anger. In this case, we are not talking about any humility and patience. It's more of a hypocrisy. Nothing can hinder a humble and patient person. Such a person overcomes even the greatest difficulties easily. Humility and patience are connected like two bird wings. Without a humble state it is impossible to endure difficulties.

Internal and external signs of humility

The concept of “humility” is best revealed in the works of St. Isaac the Syrian. It is not so easy to distinguish between the external and internal aspects of humility. Because some follow from others. It all starts with the inner life, the peace within. External actions are only a reflection of the internal state. Of course, today you can see a lot of hypocrisy. When outwardly a person seems calm, but inside he has raging passions. We are not talking about humility here.

Inner Signs of Humility

  1. Meekness.
  2. Composure.
  3. Mercy.
  4. Chastity.
  5. Obedience.
  6. Patience.
  7. Fearlessness.
  8. Shyness.
  9. Awe.
  10. Inner peace.

The last point is considered the main sign of humility. Inner peace is expressed in the fact that a person completely lacks fear of everyday difficulties, but has confidence in God’s grace, which will always protect him. A humble person does not know haste, confusion and confused thoughts. There is always peace within him. And even if the sky falls to the ground, a humble person will not even be afraid.

An important sign of inner humility is the voice of a person’s conscience, which tells him that the Lord and other people are not to blame for the failures and difficulties encountered on the path of life. When a person first of all makes claims against himself, this is true humility. Blaming others or worse yet the Lord for your failures is the highest degree of ignorance and hardness of heart.

External signs of humility

  1. A truly humble person has no interest in various worldly comforts and entertainments.
  2. He strives to quickly get away from the noisy, bustling place.
  3. A humble person is not interested in going to places with large crowds of people, meetings, rallies, concerts and other public events.
  4. Solitude and silence are the main signs of humility. Such a person never gets into disputes and conflicts, does not say unnecessary words and does not engage in meaningless conversations.
  5. Does not have external wealth or much property.
  6. True humility is manifested in the fact that a person never talks about it or flaunts his position. He hides his wisdom from the whole world.
  7. Simple speech, high thinking.
  8. He does not notice the shortcomings of other people, but always sees the merits of everyone.
  9. He is not inclined to listen to what his soul does not want.
  10. Resignedly endures insults and humiliation.

A humble person does not compare himself to anyone, but considers everyone better than himself.

As soon as they were planted, as soon as they were sown, as soon as their trunk took root in the ground, and as soon as He breathed on them, they dried up, and the whirlwind carried them away like straw. Everyone who listens to these words of Mine and does not fulfill them will become like a foolish man.

A good man brings forth good things from the good treasure of his heart, and an evil man brings forth evil things from the evil treasure of his heart, for out of the abundance of his heart his mouth speaks. Why do you call Me: Lord! God! - and do not do what I say? Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and does them, I will tell you who he is like. He is like a man building a house, who dug, went deep and laid the foundation on the rock; why, when the flood happened and the water came against this house, it could not shake it, because it was founded on stone. But he who listens and does not do is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation, which, when water came upon it, immediately collapsed; and the destruction of this house was great.

Jacob 1, 22–23

What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? can this faith save him? If a brother or sister is naked and does not have daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and fed,” but does not give them what they need for the body, what good is it? Likewise, faith, if it does not have works, is dead in itself. But someone will say: “You have faith, but I have works”: show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith without my works. You believe that God is one: you do well; and the demons believe and tremble. But do you want to know, unfounded person, that faith without works is dead?

A person is justified by works, and not by faith alone.

By grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God: not by works, so that no one can boast.

Whatever you do in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

Jude 13

We acknowledge that a person is justified by faith, apart from the works of the law.

Rome. 3, 28

Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Rome. 10, 17

They (Jews. - Note ed.) were broken off through unbelief, but you hold on by faith: do not be proud, but be afraid.

Rome. 11, 20

Accept him who is weak in faith without arguing about opinions.

Rome. 14, 1

Do you have faith? have it within yourself, before God. Blessed is he who does not condemn himself in what he chooses. And the one who doubts, if he eats (meat. - Note ed.), condemned because it is not according to faith; and everything that is not from faith is sin.

Rome. 14, 22–23

Everything is permissible for me, but not everything is beneficial; everything is permissible to me, but nothing should possess me.

1 Cor. 6, 12

We walk by faith, not by sight.

2 Cor. 5, 7

You are all sons of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

Gal. 3, 26

You, who justify yourselves by the law, are left without Christ, have fallen from grace, but we in spirit expect and hope for righteousness from faith. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has power, but faith working through love.

Gal. 5, 4–6

The righteous will live by faith; but if anyone hesitates, My soul has no pleasure in him. We are not one of those wavering to destruction, but we stand in faith for the salvation of our souls.

Heb. 10, 38–39

Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the assurance of things not seen.

Heb. 11, 1

By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the Word of God, so that what is visible was made from what is invisible. By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain; by it he received evidence that he was righteous, as God testified about his gifts; He still speaks with it even after death. By faith Enoch was translated so that he did not see death; and he was no more, because God had translated him. For before his migration he received a testimony that he pleased God. And without faith it is impossible to please God; for he who comes to God must believe that He exists and is a rewarder of those who seek Him. By faith Noah, having received a revelation of what had not yet been seen, reverently prepared an ark for the salvation of his house; by it he condemned (the whole) world, and became heir of the righteousness of faith. By faith Abraham obeyed the call to go to the country that he had to receive as an inheritance, and he went, not knowing where he was going. By faith he dwelt in the promised land as if it were a stranger, and lived in tents with Isaac and Jacob, joint heirs of the same promise; for he looked for a city that has foundations, whose maker and builder is God. By faith Sarah herself (being barren) received the power to receive seed, and gave birth out of season, for she knew that He who promised was faithful... All these died in faith, not receiving the promises, but only saw them from afar, and rejoiced, and talked about themselves that they are wanderers and strangers on earth.

Heb. 11, 3-13

Abram believed the Lord, and He counted it to him as righteousness.

Life 15, 6

Proverbs 14, 5

Every gift and injustice will be destroyed, and faithfulness will endure forever.

Sire. 40, 12

Perfidy

The wicked will be destroyed from the earth, and the treacherous will be uprooted from it.

Proverbs 2, 22

The house of Israel and the house of Judah have dealt with me very treacherously, says the Lord.

Jer. 5, 11

I will make this land desolate because they have acted treacherously, says the Lord God.

Ezek. 15, 8

Don't we all have one Father? Didn't God alone create us? Why do we act treacherously against each other, thereby violating the covenant of our fathers?

Small 2, 10

Lawless fun

Contrite, weep and wail: let your laughter turn into weeping, and your joy into sadness.

Jacob 4, 9

The joy of the wicked is short-lived, and the joy of the hypocrite is momentary.

Job 20, 5

And when you laugh, sometimes your heart hurts, and the end of joy is sadness.

And I praised the fun; because there is nothing better for a man under the sun than to eat, drink and be merry: this accompanies him in his labors during the days of his life, which God gave him under the sun.

Eccl. 8, 15

Rejoice, young man, in your youth, and let your heart taste joy in the days of your youth, and walk in the ways of your heart and according to the vision of your eyes; just know that for all this God will bring you to judgment.

Sire. 18, 32–33

Last Supper

And while they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to the disciples, saying, “Take, eat: this is My Body.” And, taking the cup and giving thanks, he gave it to them and said: drink from it, all of you, for this is My Blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. But I tell you that from now on I will not drink of this fruit of the vine until the day when I drink new wine with you in the kingdom of My Father.

Matt. 26, 26–29

And while they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed it, broke it, gave it to them, and said, “Take, eat.” this is My Body. And he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them: and they all drank from it. And he said to them, “This is My Blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many.” Truly I say to you, I will no longer drink of the fruit of the vine until the day when I drink new wine in the kingdom of God.

Mk. 14, 22–25

And when the hour came, He lay down, and the twelve Apostles with Him, and said to them: I greatly desired to eat this Passover with you before My suffering, for I tell you that I will no longer eat it until it is accomplished in the Kingdom of God. And taking the cup and giving thanks, he said: Take it and divide it among yourselves, for I tell you that I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes. And he took the bread and gave thanks, broke it and gave it to them, saying: This is My body, which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me. Likewise the cup after supper, saying: This cup is the New Testament in My blood, which is shed for you.

OK. 22, 14–20

I received from the Lord Himself what I also conveyed to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night on which he was betrayed took bread and, having given thanks, broke it and said: take, eat, this is My Body, broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me. He also took the cup after supper, and said: This cup is the new covenant in My Blood; Do this whenever you drink, in remembrance of Me. For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until He comes.

1 Cor. 11, 23–26

Eternity

He said to them, “Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house, or parents, or brothers, or sisters, or wife, or children for the kingdom of God, and will not receive much more in this time and in the age to come, eternal life.” .

OK. 18, 29–30

Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things happen; heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.

OK. 21, 32–33

Jude 1, 20–21

Our momentary light suffering produces eternal glory in an exceeding abundance, when we look not at what is seen, but at what is unseen: for what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

2 Cor. 4, 17–18

Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold of eternal life, to which you were called and have made a good confession before many witnesses.

The Lord will reign forever and ever.

Ref. 15, 18

As a whirlwind passes, so the wicked is no more; but the righteous are on an everlasting foundation.

Proverbs 10, 25

No one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins and flow out on its own, and the skins will be lost; but new wine must be put into new wineskins; then both will be saved. And no one, having drunk old wine, immediately wants new, for he says: old is better.

OK. 5, 37–39

He who loves fun will become poor; but whoever loves wine and fat will not become rich.

Go, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with joy in your heart, when God is pleased with your deeds.

Eccl. 9, 7

Woe to those who are brave to drink wine and strong to make strong drink.

Is. 5, 22

Do not show yourself brave against wine, for wine has destroyed many. The furnace tests the strength of the blade by hardening; This is how wine tests the hearts of the proud - through drunkenness. Wine is good for human life if you drink it in moderation. What is life without wine? it was created for the joy of people. Wine, consumed in moderation at the right time, is a joy to the heart and a consolation to the soul; Wine is a sorrow for the soul when one drinks a lot of it, during irritation and quarrel. Excessive consumption of wine increases the rage of the foolish to the point of stumbling, diminishing his strength and causing wounds. At a wine feast, do not reproach your neighbor and do not humiliate him during his fun; do not say insulting words to him and do not burden him with demands.

Sire. 31, 29–37

Power, superiors

Do not speak ill of the ruler of your people.

Acts 23.5

Be submissive to every human authority, for the Lord: whether to the king, as the supreme power, or to the rulers, as those sent from him to punish criminals and to reward those who do good.

1 Pet. 2, 13–14

Honor everyone, love the brotherhood, fear God, honor the king.

1 Pet. 2, 17

Let every soul be submissive to the higher authorities, for there is no authority except from God; the existing authorities have been established by God. Therefore, he who resists authority resists God's institution. And those who resist will bring condemnation upon themselves. For rulers are not a terror to good deeds, but to evil deeds. Do you want to not be afraid of power? Do good, and you will receive praise from her, for the ruler is God's servant, for your good. If you do evil, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain: he is God’s servant, an avenger to punish those who do evil. And therefore one must obey not only out of fear of punishment, but also out of conscience. This is why you pay taxes, for they are God’s servants, constantly busy with this.

Rome. 13, 1–6

First of all, I ask you to make prayers, petitions, supplications, thanksgivings for all people, for kings and for all those in authority, so that we may lead a quiet and serene life in all piety and purity.

Proverbs 11, 14

When a country deviates from the law, then there will be many leaders in it; and with a reasonable and knowledgeable husband, she will last long.

If a ruler listens to false speech, then all his servants are wicked.

Proverbs 29, 12

If you see in any area oppression of the poor and violation of justice and truth, then do not be surprised at this: because the high is watched over by the highest, and above them there is an even higher.

Retribution

(see also RETRIBUTION, REWARD)

There is no one who has left home, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for My sake and the Gospel, and will not receive now, in this time, in the midst of persecution, a hundredfold more than houses, and brothers and sisters, and fathers, and mothers, and children, and lands, and in the age to come eternal life.

It is easy for the Lord to reward a person according to his deeds on the day of death.

Sire. 18, 30–31

Another is kept from sin by poverty, and in this abstinence he will not repent.

Sire. 20, 21

...So that you do not deal with your brother in any way illegally or selfishly: for the Lord is the avenger of all this, as we told you and testified before.

1 Thess. 4, 6

How severe a punishment, do you think, will he be subject to who tramples on the Son of God and does not consider sacred the Blood of the Covenant by which he was sanctified, and insults the Spirit of grace? Heb. 10, 29–31

Do not neglect the punishment of the Lord, and do not lose heart when He rebukes you. For the Lord punishes whomever he loves; he beats every son whom he receives. If you suffer punishment, then God treats you as sons. For is there any son whom his father does not punish? If you remain without punishment, which is common to everyone, then you are illegitimate children, not sons. Moreover, if we, being punished by our carnal parents, were afraid of them, then should we not much more submit to the Father of spirits in order to live? They punished us arbitrarily for a few days; and He is for our benefit, so that we may share in His holiness. Any punishment at the present time seems not to be joy, but sadness; but afterwards he brings to those who are taught the peaceful fruit of righteousness.

Synonym dictionary: Patience – patience, tolerance, forbearance.

2. Definition of the Bible
The New Testament uses two words for patience:
A. Patience with events:
The Greek word " hupomeno"(hupomeno) means to go through something, to be tested, to endure difficulties, to suffer, to endure. It describes perseverance and the ability to endure troubles, difficulties, and various kinds of sorrows: Romans 12:12 « ...be comforted by hope; be patient in tribulation, constant in prayer" The expression “be patient in tribulation” is literally translated as “endure tribulation with dignity.”

B. Patience with people:
The Greek word " macrothumia"(macrotumiya) is literally translated as "long-suffering" and in the text most often means endurance, endurance, long-suffering and long-suffering. It describes generosity, long-suffering and forbearance towards a person and his behavior. This word is most often used in the Bible to describe God's patience with mankind. The Word of God calls all Christians to also be patient: James 5:7-8 « So, brothers, be long-suffering until the coming of the Lord. Behold, the farmer is waiting for precious fruit from the earth and for him endures for a long time until it receives early and late rain. Be patient and you, strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is drawing near».

II. THE BIBLE ABOUT GOD'S PATIENCE

1. The Lord God is called the God of patience:
A. The Lord is the God of patience, that is, He is the source of patience. From the Bible we learn that God is love. From it we learn that God is patience: Romans 15:5 « God is patience and may he grant you consolation to be of one mind with one another, according to the teaching of Christ Jesus...»
B. The Lord is a God of patience, which means that in His great mercy He bears with us our weaknesses, shortcomings, and sins: Exodus 34:6 “ And the Lord passed before him and cried: The Lord, the Lord, the loving and merciful God, long-suffering and abundantly merciful and true».

2. God's patience is named in the Bible longsuffering
The Lord God shows great patience towards His creation: Psalm 102:8-9 « The Lord is generous and merciful, long-suffering and abundantly merciful: he is not completely angry, and is not forever indignant». Psalm 144:8 « The Lord is generous and merciful, long-suffering and abounding in mercy" God’s long-suffering is that He is “slow to anger,” and He calls each of us to the same thing: James 1:19 « Therefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to be angry...»
Throughout the history of mankind, the Lord has shown His long-suffering towards people: Romans 9:22 « ...God, wanting to show anger and reveal His power, with with great longsuffering he spared the vessels of wrath ready to die».
God's forbearance is directly related to the free will God gave to man. Respecting our free will, God tolerates our choices and their consequences without destroying us for our failures and mistakes. Otherwise, today the earth would be deserted... If the Lord were not a long-suffering God, man would not have free will.

3. The fullness of God's long-suffering
God's long-suffering is fully understood only in the era of the New Testament, demonstrating to us His desire to save as many people as possible: 1 Timothy 2:4 « Who wants all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth». 2 Peter 3:9 « The Lord is not slack in fulfilling his promise, as some consider slackness; But patient with us, not wanting anyone to perish, but so that everyone comes to repentance».
God's patience reaches its pinnacle in Jesus Christ: 1 Timothy 1:16 « But for this reason I received mercy, so that Jesus Christ would be the first to show in me all longsuffering as an example to those who will believe in Him for eternal life».
That's Why God's Forbearance Is Called Riches in the Message Romans 2:4 « Or you neglect the riches of God's kindness, meekness and long-suffering, not realizing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?»

4. Is there a limit to God's patience?
Despite God's long-suffering, His patience has its limits. The Lord has already demonstrated this once: in the days of Noah, when humanity was corrupted to the limit, and the Lord had to destroy everyone except Noah’s family with the waters of the flood.
The Flood should be a reminder to us that there is a limit to God's patience, and that His patience will soon come to an end. The Flood is a prototype of the end of the World and the “day of righteous judgment from God” ( Romans 2:5). This time is approaching with inexorable speed, for the Lord has already appointed the day of judgment: Acts 17:31 « for He He has appointed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness, through the Husband predestined by Him, having given the certificate to everyone, having raised Him from the dead».
The time remaining until God's wrath falls upon people cannot be called the time of God's “delay.” It is a time of mercy and longsuffering: 2 Peter 3:9 « The Lord does not delay the fulfillment of the promise, as some consider it to be delay; but is patient with us not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance" Therefore, God's Word calls upon every person: “ Consider the longsuffering of our Lord as salvation» ( 2 Peter 3:15).
If a person does not take advantage of God's time of forbearance to be reconciled to his Creator through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross, then he will “store up for himself wrath for the day of wrath”: Romans 2:5-6 « But, due to your stubbornness and unrepentant heart, you are gathering anger for yourself day of wrath and revelation of righteous judgment from God, who will reward everyone according to his deeds»; 2 Peter 3:10 « He'll come Lord's day like a thief at night, and then the heavens will pass away with a noise, the elements, having flared up, will be destroyed, the earth and all the works on it will be burned».

III. THE BIBLE ABOUT HUMAN PATIENCE

1. Parables about patience as a human virtue

  • Patience is the key to peace between people: Proverbs 15:18 « A hot-tempered person stirs up discord, and patient calms the strife».
  • Patience is better than courage: Proverbs 16:32 « Long-suffering better than the brave, and he who controls himself is better than the conqueror of the city».
  • Patience is a sign of prudence: Proverbs 14:29"U patient A person has a lot of intelligence, but an irritable person shows stupidity.” Proverbs 19:11"Prudence makes a man slow to anger, and glory for him is to be lenient towards wrongdoing.”
2. Biblical Examples of Patience
A. God's prophets of the Old Testament: Jacob 5:10 « IN example of suffering and long-suffering take it, my brothers, prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord».
B. Joseph: The life story of Joseph: how he was sold into slavery by his brothers and taken to Egypt - Genesis 36-45.
V. Job: James 5:11 « Here we please[call them blessed] those who endured. You heard about Job's patience and they saw the end of it from the Lord, for the Lord is very merciful and compassionate».
G. Abraham: Hebrews 6:15 « And so Abraham long-suffering, got what was promised».
D. King David: One example of King David’s long-suffering is described in 2 Samuel 16:5-14 « When King David reached Bahurim, behold, a man from the family of the house of Saul came out from there, named Shimei, the son of Gera; he went and cursed and threw stones at David and at all the servants of King David; yet the people and all the brave were on the right and left of the king. Thus spoke Shimei, slandering him: go away, go away, murderer and lawless one! The Lord turned upon you all the blood of the house of Saul, in whose place you reigned, and the Lord delivered the kingdom into the hands of Absalom your son; and behold, you are in trouble, for you are a bloodsucker. And Abishai the son of Zerui said to the king, Why does this dead dog curse my lord the king? I'll go and take his head off. And the king said, “What do you and me, sons of Zeruiah?” let him speak evil, for the Lord commanded him to speak evil of David. Who can say: why are you doing this? And David said to Abishai and to all his servants, Behold, if my son, which came out of my bowels, seeks my life, how much more is the son of Benjamite; leave him alone, let him curse, for the Lord has commanded him; Perhaps the Lord will look upon my humiliation, and the Lord will reward me with goodness for his current slander. And David and his men went their way, and Shimei walked along the outskirts of the mountain, on his side, and walked and cursed, and threw stones and dust at his side. And the king and all the people who were with him came, weary, and rested there».
E. Apostle Paul: 2 Timothy 3:10-11 « And you followed me in teaching, life, disposition, faith, generosity, love, patience, in the persecutions, sufferings that befell me in Antioch, Iconium, Lystra; what persecutions I endured, and the Lord delivered me from them all».

3. The Lord calls Christians to patience
The Bible encourages Christians to be patient both with life's circumstances and with each other:

A. Patience with each other:
Colossians 3:12-13 « Therefore, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with mercy, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering, forgiving each other and forgiving each other if anyone has a complaint against anyone: just as Christ forgave you, so do you».
Long-suffering towards one's neighbor is conditioned by love for one's neighbor. It is no coincidence that patience is an attribute of true Agape love: 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 « Love long-suffering [Greek word “hupomeno” – patience with people], is merciful, love does not envy, love does not exalt itself, is not proud, does not act outrageously, does not seek its own, is not irritated, does not think evil, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; covers everything, believes everything, hopes everything, endures everything[Greek word “hupomeno” – patience with circumstances]. Love never ends…»

B. Patience with circumstances:
Romans 5:3-4 « And not only this, but we boast in our sorrows, knowing that from sorrow comes patience, from patience– experience, from experience – hope».

  • Examples of such long-suffering in tribulations: 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 « We are oppressed on every side, but not constrained; we're in desperate circumstances, but don't despair; we are persecuted, but not abandoned; deposed, but we don't die ». 2 Corinthians 6:8-10 « ...we are considered deceivers, but we are faithful; we are unknown, but we are recognized; we are considered dead, but behold, we are alive; we are punished, but we are not dying; they upset us, but we are always happy; we are poor, but we enrich many; we have nothing but we have everything ».
  • When you are in tribulation, you must remember that the Lord God will not allow you to suffer beyond your strength: 1 Corinthians 10:13 « ...faithful is God, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond your strength but when tempted he will also give relief, so that you can endure».
  • The reward for long-suffering is salvation: Matthew 10:22 « He who endures to the end will be saved” (also in Matthew 24:13 and Mark 13:13).
CONCLUSION:

Long-suffering, like other virtues, does not automatically appear in a person with his birth. Its source is the Lord God, and therefore it is the fruit of the Holy Spirit: Galatians 5:22-23 « The fruit of the spirit: love, joy, peace, longsuffering, goodness, mercy, faith, meekness, self-control" Therefore, long-suffering is developed in a person by working on oneself with the help of regenerating action and the help of the Holy Spirit: James 1:2-4 « Count it all joy, my brothers, when you fall into various temptations, knowing that testing your faith produces patience; But let patience have its perfect work, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing».
Patience is an integral component in the process of saving our soul, along with faith. Therefore the Lord Jesus said in Luke 21:19 « Save your souls with your patience" How can we understand His words? We are saved by faith: Ephesians 2:8 « For by grace you saved through faith " Tested faith produces patience, which we need in order to maintain our faith and help us withstand all trials on the way to the Heavenly abodes.
The Bible teaches that God's promises can only be inherited through faith and patience: Hebrews 6:11-12 « We wish that each of you, for complete confidence in hope, shows the same zeal to the end, so that you do not become lazy, but imitate those who through faith and patience they inherit the promises " This same idea is confirmed by a passage from the Epistle Hebrews 10:36-37 « You need patience to having fulfilled the will of God, get what you promised; for yet a little while, a very little time, and the Coming One will come and will not tarry».

Based on all of the above, we can give the following definition of long-suffering: Long-suffering is the ability to go through difficulties and trials, maintaining faith and remaining faithful to God.

The Word of God calls us to be patient, emulating Christ in our patience, who showed the whole world an example of patience in suffering: Hebrews 12:1-2 « Therefore, we, having such a cloud of witnesses around us, will lay aside every burden and the sin that besets us and with patience Let us run the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who, for the joy that was set before Him, endured the cross despising the shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God».

Dictionary of synonyms: Patience - patience, tolerance, leniency.
2. DEFINITION OF THE BIBLE
The New Testament uses two words for patience:
A. Patience with events:
The Greek word hupomeno means to go through something, to be tested, to endure hardship, to suffer, to endure. It describes perseverance and the ability to endure troubles, difficulties, and various kinds of sorrows: Romans 12:12 “...be encouraged by hope; be patient in tribulation and constant in prayer.” The expression “be patient in tribulation” is literally translated as “endure tribulation with dignity.”

B. Patience with people:

The Greek word “makrothumia” is literally translated as “long-suffering” and in the text most often means endurance, endurance, long-suffering and long-suffering. It describes generosity, long-suffering and forbearance towards a person and his behavior. This word is most often used in the Bible to describe God's patience with mankind. The Word of God calls all Christians to also be patient: James 5:7-8 “Therefore, brothers, be patient until the coming of the Lord. Behold, the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth and for it he endures for a long time until he receives the early and late rain. Be patient and strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is drawing near.”
II. THE BIBLE ABOUT GOD'S PATIENCE
1. THE LORD GOD IS CALLED THE GOD OF PATIENCE:
A. The Lord is a God of patience, that is, He is the source of patience. From the Bible we learn that God is love. From it we learn that God is patience: Romans 15:5 “Now may the God of patience and comfort grant you to be of one mind with one another, according to the teaching of Christ Jesus...”
B. The Lord is a God of patience, which means that in His great mercy He bears with us our weaknesses, shortcomings, and sins: Exodus 34:6 “And the Lord passed by before him, and cried, The Lord, the Lord, a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundantly merciful and true."
2. GOD’S PATIENCE IS CALLED LONG-SUFFERENCE IN THE BIBLE
The Lord God shows great long-suffering towards His creation: Psalm 102:8-9 “The Lord is generous and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in kindness: He is not angry to the end, and is not indignant forever.” Psalm 145:8 “The Lord is generous and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in mercy.” God’s long-suffering is that He is “slow to anger,” and He calls each of us to do the same: James 1:19 “Therefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to speak. anger…"
Throughout the history of mankind, the Lord has shown His long-suffering towards people: Romans 9:22 “...God, desiring to show his wrath and to demonstrate his power, with great long-suffering spared the vessels of wrath, which were ready to be destroyed.”
God's long-suffering is fully understood only in the New Testament era, demonstrating to us His desire to save as many people as possible: 1 Timothy 2:4 “Who wants all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” 2 Peter 3:9 “The Lord is not slack in keeping his promise, as some count slackness; but he is patient with us, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”
God's long-suffering reaches its pinnacle in Jesus Christ: 1 Timothy 1:16 “But for this purpose I received mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show all long-suffering as an example to those who will believe on Him for eternal life.”
This is why God's forbearance is called riches in Romans 2:4 "Or do you despise the riches of God's kindness, meekness, and long-suffering, not realizing that God's kindness leads you to repentance?"
4. IS THERE A LIMIT TO GOD’S LONG-STALKING?
Despite God's long-suffering, His patience has its limits. The Lord has already demonstrated this once: in the days of Noah, when humanity was corrupted to the limit, and the Lord had to destroy everyone except Noah’s family with the waters of the flood.
The Flood should be a reminder to us that there is a limit to God's patience, and that His patience will soon come to an end. The Flood foreshadows the end of the world and “the day of righteous judgment from God” (Romans 2:5). This time is approaching with inexorable speed, for the Lord has already appointed the day of judgment: Acts 17:31 “For He has appointed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man He has appointed, having given proof to all by raising Him from the dead.”
The time remaining until God's wrath falls upon people cannot be called the time of God's “delay.” It is a time of mercy and longsuffering: 2 Peter 3:9 “The Lord is not slack in keeping his promise, as some count slackness; but he is patient with us, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” Therefore, God’s Word calls on every person to “count the longsuffering of our Lord as salvation” (2 Peter 3:15).
If a person does not take advantage of God's time of forbearance to be reconciled to his Creator through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross, then he will “store up wrath for himself for the day of wrath”: Romans 2:5-6 “But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath for yourself for the day of wrath and revelation of righteous judgment from God, who will reward everyone according to his deeds”; 2 Peter 3:10 “The day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be destroyed with burning fire, and the earth and everything that is in it will be burned up.”
III. THE BIBLE ABOUT HUMAN PATIENCE
1. PARABLES ABOUT PATIENCE AS A HUMAN VIRTUE
Patience is the key to peace between people: Proverbs 15:18 “A quick-tempered man stirs up strife, but a patient one calms strife.”
Patience is better than courage: Proverbs 16:32 “He who is patient is better than the brave, and he who controls himself is better than the conqueror of a city.”
Patience is a sign of prudence: Proverbs 14:29 “A patient man has much understanding, but a quick-tempered man shows foolishness.” Proverbs 19:11 “Prudence makes a man slow to anger, and it is his glory to be forgiving of wrongdoing.”

2. BIBLE EXAMPLES OF PATIENCE
A. God's prophets of the Old Testament: James 5:10 “Take, my brethren, the prophets, which spake in the name of the Lord, as an example of suffering and long-suffering.”
B. Joseph: The story of Joseph’s life: how he was sold into slavery by his brothers and taken to Egypt - Genesis 36-45.
Q. Job: James 5:11 “Behold, we call blessed [call blessed] those who have endured. You have heard about Job’s patience and seen the end of it from the Lord, for the Lord is very merciful and compassionate.”
G. Abraham: Hebrews 6:15 “So Abraham, being patient, received what was promised.”
D. King David: One example of King David’s long-suffering is described in 2 Samuel 16:5-14 “When King David came to Bahurim, behold, there came out from there a man from the family of the house of Saul, named Shimei, the son of Gera; he went and cursed and threw stones at David and at all the servants of King David; yet the people and all the brave were on the right and left of the king. Thus spoke Shimei, slandering him: go away, go away, murderer and lawless one! And David and his men went their way, and Shimei walked along the outskirts of the mountain, on his side, and walked and cursed, and threw stones and dust at his side. And the king and all the people who were with him came, weary, and rested there.”
E. Apostle Paul: 2 Timothy 3:10-11 “And you followed me in doctrine, life, disposition, faith, generosity, love, patience, in persecutions, in the sufferings that befell me in Antioch, Iconium, Lystra; what persecutions I endured, and the Lord delivered me from them all.”
3. THE LORD CALLS CHRISTIANS TO PATIENCE
The Bible encourages Christians to be patient both with life's circumstances and with each other:
A. Patience with each other:
Colossians 3:12-13 “Therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with mercy, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering, bearing with one another and forgiving each other, if anyone has a complaint against anyone: just as Christ has forgiven you, so also You".
Long-suffering towards one's neighbor is conditioned by love for one's neighbor. It is no coincidence that patience is an attribute of true Agape love: 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 “Love is patient [Greek word “hupomeno” - patience with people], is kind, love does not envy, love is not arrogant, is not proud, does not act unruly, does not seek his own, is not irritated, does not think evil, does not rejoice in untruth, but rejoices in the truth; covers all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things [Greek word “hupomeno” – patience in relation to circumstances]. Love never ends…"

B. Patience with circumstances:
Romans 5:3-4 “And not only this, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that from tribulation comes endurance, from endurance comes experience, and from experience comes hope.”
Examples of such long-suffering in tribulations: 2 Corinthians 4:8-9 “We are oppressed on every side, but not distressed; we are in desperate circumstances, but we do not despair; we are persecuted, but not abandoned; We are cast down, but we do not perish.” 2 Corinthians 6:8-10…we are considered deceivers, but we are faithful; we are unknown, but we are recognized; we are considered dead, but behold, we are alive; we are punished, but we do not die; we are saddened, but we always rejoice; We are poor, but we enrich many; We have nothing, but we possess everything.”
«
When in tribulation, it is necessary to remember that the Lord God will not allow you to suffer beyond your strength: 1 Corinthians 10:13 “...God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” .
The reward for long-suffering is salvation: Matthew 10:22 “He who endures to the end will be saved” (also in Matthew 24:13 and Mark 13:13).

CONCLUSION:
Long-suffering, like other virtues, does not automatically appear in a person with his birth. The Bible teaches that God's promises can only be inherited through faith and patience: Hebrews 6:11-12 “We desire that each one of you, for the complete assurance of hope, will show the same zeal to the end, so that you will not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.” The same idea is confirmed by the passage from Hebrews 10:36-37 “You need patience, so that, having done the will of God, you may receive what was promised; for yet a little while, a very little time, and the Coming One will come and will not tarry.”

Holy Fathers on Patience
A prudent soul in disasters and sorrows does not lose hope, but possesses what it possessed and what would not have been inflicted on it, among a thousand temptations, enduring everything, it says: “Even if I die, I will not leave Him.”
St. Macarius the Great

Perfection of the heart is acquired not so much by distance from people as by the virtue of patience. If patience is firmly strengthened, it can keep us at peace even with those who hate peace; if it is not acquired, then we will constantly be in disagreement with those who are perfect and better than us.
St. John Cassian

Everyone knows that patience consists in enduring suffering, and only the one who endures all the insults inflicted on him without a murmur should be called patient.
St. John Cassian

He who is long-suffering is not quickly inflamed with anger and does not resort to insults, nor is he easily moved by empty speech.
He who is long-suffering, if offended, is not upset, does not oppose those who resist, and is firm in every matter.
He who is long-suffering is always in joy, in gladness, in admiration, because he trusts in the Lord.
The long-suffering one is far from angry because he endures everything.
A patient person does not quickly fall into deception, is not prone to irritation, rejoices in sorrows, gets used to every good deed, pleases people who are not satisfied with anything, and pleases them in everything.
St. Ephraim Sirin

There is no measure of patience if it is dissolved in humility.
St. Ephraim Sirin

Those who have patience are saved from many sorrows.
St. Ephraim Sirin

Be patient with the Lord in the day of trouble, so that he may cover you in the day of wrath.
St. Ephraim Sirin

Everyone must, as much as necessary, endure the shortcomings of his neighbor, out of trust in God. But woe to him who is tolerated, and he does not understand this.
St. Ephraim Sirin

Be patient, so that you may become strong and prudent. Long-suffering is a wonderful gift because it drives out hot temper, anger and contempt, and brings the soul to a peaceful state.
St. Ephraim Sirin

We do not tolerate even the slightest suffering. Because of our unbelief, patience is removed from us.
St. Ephraim Sirin

If you are offended in any way, resort to patience, and the harm will pass on to those who offended you.
St. Neil of Sinai

With patience, we will find consolation where we did not expect it.
St. Neil of Sinai

Endure sorrows, because in them, like roses among thorns, virtues arise and ripen.
St. Neil of Sinai

God not only delivers from sorrow those who try to generously endure the temptations sent to them, but even in the very sorrows He provides such consolation that we completely forget them and receive a great many benefits.
St. John Chrysostom

To be worthy to endure anything for the sake of Christ is the greatest grace, a perfect crown and a reward no less than future reward. Those who know how to sincerely and ardently love Christ know this.
St. John Chrysostom

For me it is more valiant to endure evil for Christ than to accept honor from him. This is a great honor, this is glory, beyond which there is nothing.
St. John Chrysostom

If you have no patience with your neighbor, then how will God tolerate you!
St. John Chrysostom

Nothing can serve as such evidence of perfect rationality as long-suffering.
St. John Chrysostom

The depth of long-suffering is shown in a person when he remains equally calm in the presence and absence of slanderers.
St. John Climacus

Where the fear of Gehenna appears, there is the patience of all labors and sorrows.
St. John Climacus

He who can joyfully endure an insult, even having in his hands the means to repel it, has received consolation from God through faith in Him.
St. Isaac the Syrian

He who with humility endures the accusations brought against him has achieved perfection and the holy Angels are amazed at him.
St. Isaac the Syrian

The power of patience is stronger than the sweet thoughts that take possession of the heart.
St. Isaac the Syrian

Patiently endure the blows of heartbreaking accidents, for God’s providence wants to cleanse you with such.
Abba Thalassius

When someone endures everything that befalls him with joy, then no matter what happens to him, everything calms him down.
St. Peter Damascene

If someone thinks that he is involved in all the virtues, but does not endure to the end, then he will not escape the snares of the devil and will not be guided to achieve the Kingdom of Heaven. For even those who have already received the betrothal of eternal life here need patience in order to receive the perfect reward for their exploits in the future.
St. Peter Damascene

Patience tends to kill the despair that kills the soul. It teaches the soul to console itself and not to lose heart from many battles and sorrows.
St. Peter Damascene

It is impossible to find a place in mental life where there is no abuse. There is no place without trials, therefore, without patience it is impossible to find peace.
St. Peter Damascene

It is better to endure what befalls us, to resort to God, than to suffer a falling away out of fear of danger, falling into the hands of the devil and into eternal falling away.
St. Peter Damascene

St. Theodore the Studite

If the fortress of patience breaks, quickly correct it by restoring the strength of the mind.
St. Theodore the Studite

If a Christian forgets about grace and thinks that he himself bore the burden of trial and patience by his own strength, and not by the power of God’s grace, then he will lose grace and remain naked from it, and the devil, finding him naked, pushes him around wherever he wants and how he wants.
St. Simeon the New Theologian

In relation to the omnipotent and all-holy will of God, there can be no other corresponding feelings in a person other than unlimited reverence and equally unlimited submission. Patience is made up of these feelings.
St. Ignatiy Brianchaninov

Patient bearing of one's cross is true vision and consciousness of one's sin. There is no self-delusion in this consciousness.
St. Ignatiy Brianchaninov

By allowing grief and self-pity in patience, you diminish the value of what the Lord gives you.
St. Feofan the Recluse

The spirit of true patience is surrendering oneself to the will of God, completely, with readiness to accept everything as from the hand of the Lord.
St. Feofan the Recluse

Patience in life is a gift of God and is given to those who seek and, even if they strain through force, to resist confusion, troubles and problems.
St. Feofan the Recluse

Abba Hierax lived in the Nitrian desert. One day demons came to him in the form of Angels. Tempting him, they told him: “You have another 50 years to live: how can you withstand such a long time in this terrible desert?” He answered them: “You have upset me by assigning me to live a few years: I have prepared for patience for 200 years.” Hearing this, the demons left, emitting screams.

One day John Moschus fell into great anguish and, coming to Saint Macarius of Alexandria, said to him: “Abba, what should I do? My thoughts confuse me, saying, “You are not doing anything here, go away from here.” The Holy Father answered: “Tell your thoughts: for Christ I guard the walls.”
Lawsaik

A certain brother lived in a dormitory in obedience and was loved by five brothers and unloved by one brother. He left that monastery and moved to another. Here eight brothers loved him, and two hated him. He left this monastery and entered a third, in which seven brethren were disposed towards him, and five were not. The brother ran away from there too. Approaching the next monastery, he thought: “If I obey my thoughts, then there will not be enough places in the universe for my transitions. From now on I promise to endure.” Having written on paper: “In
I will endure the name of Jesus Christ, the Son of God,” he put the note in his belt. In the monastery, whenever he was upset or tempted, he took a note from his belt, read what was written in it, and was consoled by this. The brothers of the monastery, through the influence of the devil, began to consider the ascetic a sorcerer wearing charm in his belt, and reported this to the abbot. The abbot was a spiritual man, knowing his brother’s humility, he realized that what was said to him was done out of the envy of the devil. Having called to him all the brethren of the monastery and the slandered brother, the abbot, despite the resistance of that brother, unfastened his belt and took out a note. When it was read loudly in the meeting of the brethren: “In the name of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, I will endure,” the brothers were amazed and asked forgiveness from the patient.
