Sheng. Climb

At the previous stage, the reunification of all forces was achieved. Here is the result of this reunion. The very image of the hexagram indicates growth, which is the result of the reunification of all forces, because here, at the bottom of the hexagram, we have the Xun trigram, which symbolizes the tree, at the top we have the Kun trigram, which symbolizes the earth. This indicates the image of a tree, which, having gathered all its strength in the spring, breaks through the thickness of the earth and grows. Already in this movement of the tree, an indication of the possibility of development is given and the direction of this development is indicated, i.e. up. In addition, thanks to this upward movement, the possibility of manifestation is achieved here, but thereby also the opportunity to see a more developed and highly standing man. Therefore, there is no need to worry about the possibility of being abandoned. And the text, warning about the absence of any danger, also mentions only that the march to the south is fortunate. The South is seen as the place where the sun reaches its maximum manifestation, and therefore the place of manifestation in general. Thus, in the text we read:

Climb.
Initial accomplishment.
Favorable meeting with a great man.
Don't mourn.
Going south is good luck.

1. At the very beginning of the ascent process, which is, of course, important point, only one thing is necessary - to be strictly aware of what the conditions for the rise will be and how it can be carried out. Therefore, the text here, noting only the unconditionally positive course of the process, says:

Weakness in the beginning.
Get up as you please.
Great happiness.

2. The ability to rise correctly is the most important property, which is another form of inner truthfulness, noted in the second position. During the ascent, it is completely unimportant how many sacrifices a person will invest in this ascent. It is essential only to carry it out correctly and move steadily upwards. The text says:

Strong trait in second [place].
Be truthful and then it [will] be favorable
offering a [small] sacrifice.
There will be no bullshit.

3. The very image of the upper trigram Kun, coming before the third position, can be the key to deciphering the image given in the aphorism of this third feature. All three lines of the upper trigram are interrupted in the middle. It symbolizes emptiness. On the other hand, this trigram denotes a city, for the city is one of the components of the earth, i.e. trigrams Kun. That's why it's talking about an empty city. But the image of an empty city is also understood in a figurative sense, indirectly indicating the futility of the ascent, if we limit ourselves to the ascent only at this stage. This is self-evident if we take into account everything that has been said in the previous about the third position as a position of crisis. That is why in the text we find only:

Rise to an empty city.

4. In this position, the upper trigram, which essentially signifies the earth, is seen through another image, the Qi mountain. The very name "Mountain Qi", despite Knight's critical remarks, cannot confuse us, because we attribute the compilation of the "Book of Changes" not to the traditional date, but to a later date, when the image of the famous Qi Mountain could already be included in the text. Here the image of ascent is also expressed with the help of a mountain, but this ascent is quite prosperous; the text of the Book of Changes speaks of him twice as bringing a happy outcome. It may seem strange that the image of the king appeared in the fourth position, because it would rather be expected in the fifth position. However, here, as Ou-i points out, the activity of the king is meant, since it is manifested in his entourage. Strictly speaking, it is not the close one who acts, but for those around him, all activity is concentrated in him. In this sense, the text can be understood:

Weak trait in fourth [place].
The king needs to get to Mount Qi.
Happiness.
There will be no bullshit.

5. In the fifth position, the maximum lifting point is reached. Here, as an internal quality, only the steadfast preservation of one's position is necessary, and this alone can lead to a favorable outcome. But to confine ourselves to it would mean not fulfilling all the moral duty that stands before a person who takes this position, for activity aimed at one's own good is by no means considered in the Book of Changes as a morally positive act. Therefore, here the Book of Changes speaks of those people who, perhaps, are on lower levels, but for them, too, the situation of ascent is quite effective. It must be understood that the ascent proceeds in stages, and, despite all the difference in these stages, the person who, due to living conditions, finds himself in the fifth position of the situation of ascent, must provide maximum assistance to all those who, perhaps without noticing it, are moving up. In this sense, the text is deciphered in the commentary literature:

Weak trait in fifth [place].
<2>Climbing stairs.
<1>Resilience is a blessing.

6. The reunification of all forces, characterized in the previous situation, seems to be considered so complete that even the sixth position of the given situation does not cease to be affected by the rise (we have repeatedly seen the cessation of the characteristic features of the situation in the sixth position). Is it true, characteristic the sixth position affects only the fact that the external manifestation of the quality of the given situation as a whole stands in the background here. In addition, the height of the sixth position, which is the maximum height of any hexagram, manifests itself in the image of a rise that goes out of sight, but still it is a rise. And by virtue of the above-mentioned totality of power acquired in the previous position, here the text even speaks of the unceasingly steadfast preservation of this upsurge. Thus, in the text we read:

Above is a weak feature.
