00:01 — REGNUM Today, July 1, Russia celebrates the Day of the Sea and River Fleet Worker. The Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR decided in 1980 to celebrate the professional holiday on the first Sunday of July.

Fundamentals of management of maritime transport as a single industry National economy countries were founded in July 1924, when the Joint Stock Company "Sovtorgflot" was formed. During the years of the Great Patriotic War transport ships made thousands of voyages and performed combat missions as part of ships of naval bases. During this time, the Soviet transport fleet transported about 100 million tons of cargo needed by the country and the front. However, during the war, the industry lost 380 ships, one hundred ports and port points were destroyed, as well as ship repair enterprises.

Nevertheless, in 1965, the USSR maritime transport fleet already amounted to 1187 ships and reached the sixth place in the world. In the 1970s and 1980s, hundreds of specialized vessels entered the transport fleet, and specialized coastal complexes were built. New methods of organizing labor and managing the industry with the help of automated systems have received great development. The Soviet fleet became an equal partner of many ship-owning companies of the world and became a member of a number of international organizations.

In the 1990s after the collapse Soviet Union the industry is in crisis. In order to meet the needs of Russia in the transportation of goods and their transshipment in ports, the government adopted in 1993 the Program for the Revival of the Russian Merchant Fleet.

Inland water transport is now a complex production and technological complex, which includes the river fleet, the infrastructure of inland waterways, navigable hydraulic structures, river ports, industrial enterprises, shipyards and tourism companies. In terms of length, inland waterways are almost twice as long as federal highways - 101.7 thousand kilometers. The creation of the fleet began with the decree of Peter I, in which the ruler indicated that "there will be sea vessels." This happened in 1696 and is rightfully considered a historical event. After 30 years in Russian Empire a permanent squadron was created. 111 brigantines, 60 sailboats, 38 frigates, more than a hundred galleys, as well as many cargo liners, bombardment ships and other small sea vehicles were built.

In the Soviet Union, in 1924, Sovtorgflot was created - a society that brought together marine vehicles, ship repair plants, educational institutions and other organizations that previously belonged to various structures.

During the years of the Second World War, the fleets showed excellent results in battles, more than 100 million cargo was transported. Hundreds of sailors were awarded awards and orders.

In the 1960s, maritime modes of transport become leading in international trade relations. The fleet developed and grew, coastal bases and special ships for the transport of goods were built. The flotilla of the union was accepted into international organizations, where it became an ally of numerous states.
