Until yesterday, the highest point I've been to was at 3,988 meters. Yesterday my record was broken. I climbed the Khardung La pass in Ladakh.

Its official height is 5,602 meters (almost the height of Elbrus) and it is recognized by the Guinness Book of Records and National Geographic magazine as the world's highest automobile pass. In fact, its height according to my GPS was 5,377 meters. It seems that the Indian authorities inflated the height of the pass in order to get the palm, since there are a couple of passes in Tibet with roads built above 5377. But that's not the point.

I ended up in Tibet with an expedition organized by the Two Sticks free flight restaurant chain. From June 1 to June 15, restaurant visitors could fill out a participation form and go either to Venezuela or Tibet. Unfortunately, due to unrest, the Chinese stopped issuing visas to Tibet, and at the last moment it had to be replaced by Little Tibet or Ladakh - a region located in northern India, and almost identical to Tibet.

We spent the first few days in the city of Lech, located at an altitude of 3,500 meters. Here we went through acclimatization before further ascent to the remote lake Tso Moriri, where our expedition should take water samples and bring them to Russia. I will talk about the first days a little later, but today I want to show photos from the Khardung La pass.

Early in the morning we got into cars and climbed almost 2 kilometers in 2 hours to the mark of 5600 (5377) meters. There, at an altitude of more than 5 kilometers above sea level, everything is different: there is a catastrophic lack of air, it is impossible to take a deep breath, the legs are wadded, constantly staggering, the head is buzzing, nauseous, speech is slow, it is very difficult to formulate one's thoughts, constant shortness of breath and other delights.

But not everyone has the same height. For some, it intoxicates and causes euphoria. In this case, they do unpredictable things, such as ripping off their clothes and taking pictures with unfamiliar Polish bikers:

On a sunny morning we started climbing the pass. The green valley with Lech in the middle was slowly moving away as we gained altitude:

On the eve there was bad weather and the tops of the mountains were covered with snow:

We made the first stop at 4,200, after climbing 700 meters, Lech, which is already relatively comfortable for us. Breathing became even harder, but not yet critical. More worried about a little dizziness and unsteady gait. Therefore, I watched with bated breath when my friends on the expedition climbed sharp stones standing on a cliff:

At an altitude of 4,500 we were all stopped at a police cordon to check our passports. There were 14 kilometers to the pass:

In Ladakh, there are a lot of mountain serpentines with closed turns. Before each of them it is customary to beep:

The higher up the hill, the narrower the road. Sometimes it was very scary to drive around on it with trucks:

All the roads of Ladakh are plastered with funny signs, where drivers are urged to drive carefully in a poetic form. For example, a sign in front of the pass reads: " You are driving on the highest highway in the world, not on a cutoff to paradise!"

Do you see the Beeline tower on the mountain? This is the pass, and the line cutting the mountain is our road:

As elsewhere in Ladakh, all the peaks are hung with ritual flags with prayers. It is believed that when the wind pulls the flags, it reads prayers from them and takes them to the valley:

To visit, if not on the roof of the world, but obviously on its ledge, and not take a picture with our flag?

There were a lot of cars on the pass, and painted trucks could hardly squeeze past SUVs with tourists:

The Khardung La Pass also made it into the Guinness Book of Records for being the tallest public toilet in the world:

The task for the day was to climb the pass, hang out there for 20 minutes and go down. Given the 4 previous days of acclimatization, everything should have been painless.

However, the group consisted almost entirely of young and hardy guys who climbed to the neighboring peak and did not want to leave for any. As a result, we spent about an hour and a half on the pass, and even got stuck in a traffic jam on the way down.

On this day, we very quickly - in 2 hours - climbed 2 kilometers, from the level of 3500 to 5600, and even spent too much time at altitude. The combination of these circumstances became fatal for me. Despite the assurances of the guide that I would feel better as soon as we descended 500 meters, this did not happen. The further we went down, the more mountain sickness covered me and my comrades.

We had a headache, many felt sick, their stomachs were spinning, and everyone walked around exhausted. Upon arrival at the hotel, I went to bed, and when I woke up, I realized that I couldn’t see anything with one eye:

Our guide gave me a strong medicine for altitude sickness - diacarb. An hour later, the eye passed, but headache and nausea remained. In the end, we decided to call a doctor, who, among other things, measured my blood pressure. It turned out to be 170 by 120:

He prescribed me some strong and fast-acting medicine and put me on oxygen:

He promised that everything would pass in a couple of hours, but said that it was up to me to decide whether to continue the expedition or not, since for the next 4 nights we had to sleep at altitudes of 4500 - 4800 meters, and spending the night at such an altitude is much more difficult than a short-term climb to 5600 .

After the doctor's visit, I had 3 options:

* Continue climbing together with everyone.
* Lie down for a day in Leh, see how you feel and maybe catch up with the rest in a day at Lake Tso Moriri.
* Fly down to Delhi at sea level and then to Moscow.

During the evening, my decision flowed smoothly from the first point to the last. The fact is that despite the strong medication given by the doctor, and his assurances that the pressure should decrease in an hour, it still grew.

They dragged an apparatus with oxygen to my room, put 2 dirty tubes into my nose, which had obviously been in more than one nose before me, and let me breathe in oxygen. They promised that in 2 hours I would jump out of bed and run to molest the girls, however, after 2 hours my condition did not improve, but continued to worsen.

All this time I was surfing the Internet and texting

"Fools and roads" - this problem concerns not only our country. The problem of dangerous and mediocre roads exists in many countries of the world. About the existence of some of them, we could not even imagine.

We present you the "Top 10" most dangerous roads of our time.

10. Gravelly Hill (England).

This site is located at an altitude of 3529 meters and is part of the Himalayan range. The Indian mountain road is constantly exposed to raging winds, heavy snowfalls, so in winter this road is impassable and remains closed. This pass is vital and connects such settlements as Kashmir and Ladakh. They were subjected to fierce fighting in 1948 between Pakistan and India, and constantly changed hands.

05. Sichuan-Tibet (China).

The 2411 km highway is located between Tibet and Chengdu. Fourteen mountains carry this road, surrounded by dozens of Tibetan rivers and wild forests. highest point these mountains are 6095 m. 04. Siberian road (Russia).

The road runs all the way to Yakutsk (highway M56), and there is simply no other official passage to this city. The length of the highway is 1236 km. Cars have no place here. Even tractors and trucks get stuck in blurry road mud. The condition of the highway is catastrophic, and whether the situation will be harmed in the near future. 03. Taroko Gorge (Taiwan).

The beautiful tunnel road of Teroko Gorge is a favorite route among tourists, however, it is very dangerous to go this way without a guide! The road runs through tunnels measuring 4 x 3 (height and width). A large amount of marble is mined in the Taroko Gorge, and the Taroko road is the way to transport this rock.

02. Halsema (Philippines).

Halsema also has the name "Mountain Path". This is the highest highway in the Philippines (7.4 km above sea level). The highway was named after American-born engineer Julius Hobzems. This man came to the post of mayor of the city of Baguio in the 1920s and 30s. The construction of this road took about seven years and local residents were used as builders. During the rainy season, a large number of landslides are observed in these places, which are a danger to all road users.

01. North Yungas (Bolivia).

The "Road of Death" has a length of almost 66 km and is located at an altitude of 4.5 km. In 1995, this road was named the most dangerous in the world. About 400 tourists a year died on this route. Commemorative marks and signs have been installed at the places of death of people. In 2006, another path was created, however, North Yungas still remains a path of constant "adventure".

Most of the treacherous routes are located in the mountains, where there is a risk not only to fall into the abyss, but also to become a victim of a collapse. We offer you the top deadly roads.

When planning a trip from point "A" to point "B", each driver carefully chooses the safest and highest quality route. The road is the most popular link connecting countries, cities, and various settlements. They are different: wide, narrow, straight and winding. And there are roads that, in the usual sense of the word, can hardly be called “road”.

1 Bolivia - Death Road

The first place in the ranking of the most dangerous roads in the world is occupied by the forty-mile Yungas highway in Bolivia, which annually takes more than a hundred lives. It is rightly called the "Road of Death". On a stretch of about 70 km, connecting La Paz and Coroico, more than 25 cars crash every year and 100-200 people die. It is an extremely narrow, winding road with steep slopes and slippery surfaces. Landslides are common due to tropical downpours, and thick fogs significantly reduce visibility. The worst accident in the history of Bolivia happened on July 24, 1983. Then a bus fell into the canyon, in which there were more than 100 people. However, this is almost the only road connecting northern Bolivia with the capital, so its operation does not stop today. Since the early 1990s, the Death Road has become a place of tourist pilgrimage among foreigners. In December 1999, a car with eight tourists from Israel fell into an abyss. But this does not stop fans of "tickle nerves."

2. Brazil - BR-116

The second longest road in Brazil, which stretches from Porto Allegre to Rio de Janeiro itself. The stretch of road from Curatiba to São Paulo stretches along sheer cliffs, sometimes going into tunnels carved into the stone. Due to numerous fatal accidents, this road was nicknamed the "Highway of Death".

3. China - Guoliang Tunnel

This undoubtedly dangerous road is called by the locals “the road that does not forgive mistakes”. The path, carved into the rock by hand, was the only link between the local village and outside world. It took 5 years to build and many locals died in accidents during construction. On May 1, 1977, the authorities built the tunnel, which is 1,200 meters long, and opened it to vehicular traffic.

4. China Sichuan - Tibet Highway

This high mountain road is considered one of the most dangerous roads in the world. Its length is 2412 km. It begins in the east of China in the province of Sichuan, and ends in the west in Tibet. The highway passes 14 high mountains, the average height of which is 4000-5000 meters, covers dozens of rivers and forests. Due to the numerous dangerous sections, the number of fatal accidents on this route for last years increased many times over.

5. Costa Rica - Pan American Highway

According to the Guinness Book of Records, the Pan-American Highway is the longest highway in the world. It starts in North America and ends in the South South America, and this is 47,958 km. A relatively small section of this road passes through Costa Rica, and has received the title of "the bloodiest route." And the point here is that this road runs along the picturesque tropical forests of the country and construction work is not being carried out there. During the rainy season, sections of the track are washed away, often leading to fatal accidents. In addition, the road here is narrow and crooked, floods and landslides often occur.

6. France - Passage du Gois

Not only high mountain roads can be unsafe and threatening human life. The Passage de Gois motorway in France, 4.5 km long, is impressive and intimidating at the same time. This road is only open for traffic for a few hours a day. The rest of the day it is hidden under water. Going on the road, you first need to carefully study the tide schedule, otherwise your car will simply sink.

7. Northern Italy - Vicenza

This path was built on the tracks of an ancient path, and it is possible to move along it only on motorcycles and bicycles. It is a narrow and rather slippery path that runs along rocks and cliffs. Incredibly stunning landscapes open up before lovers of extreme sports, and, despite its danger, this road is very popular among tourists.

8 Mexico - Devil's Backbone

In the Mexican state of Durango, there is a road known as the Devil's Backbone. This mountain pass for a long time remained the only link between the cities of Durango and Mazatlan. To get from one locality in another, local residents will need at least five hours. But from a bird's eye view, the Devil's Backbone is a mesmerizing sight. Agree that such a picture you will not see often. But for local residents, this road remains the most dangerous and longest, and throughout the journey people pray to get there alive.

9. Alaska - Dalton Highway

The most snowy and isolated track in the world. Designed exclusively for transportation building materials. The first car drove over it in 1974. It is noteworthy that the length of this road is exactly 666 km! Along the way, there are three small villages with a population of 10, 22 and 25 people, respectively. And if your car suddenly breaks down, you will not be envied. Experienced drivers always have everything you need with them: from a supply of water to a first aid kit.

10. Russia - Federal Highway M56 Lena

Popularly known as the Highway from Hell, this 1,235 km long road runs parallel to the Lena River all the way to Yakutsk. This northern city is considered one of the coldest cities on earth, with an average January temperature of -45 °C. It is noteworthy that it is worst to move around in the summer. At this time of the year, traffic on the road is almost paralyzed due to heavy rains and hundreds of kilometers of traffic jams are formed. In 2006, this road was recognized as one of the most dangerous.

11. Philippines - Halsema Highway

Such a "road" is generally difficult to call this word. It begins in the form of a cobblestone pavement and gradually turns into a pile of dirt. The length of the road is almost 250 km, and it will take at least 10 hours to drive from start to finish even in good weather. This is a very narrow road with frequent mountain falls, but is the only way to get to the island of Luzon. Due to frequent fatal accidents, this route has been named one of the most dangerous in the world.

12 Norway - Troll Ladder

This road is also known as the "Troll Road". She is dangerous and beautiful at the same time. The track looks like a mountain serpentine, has 11 steep loops (hairpins), and is open for travel only in spring and summer. But even during this period, cars with a length of more than 12.5 meters are prohibited from passing, because in some places the width of the road does not exceed 3.3 meters.

13. Pakistan - Karakoram Highway

This route is the highest mountain road in the world, and its length is 1,300 km. It has almost no pavement. In addition, the convergence of snow avalanches and blockages on the passes is not uncommon here.

14. India - Leh Manali

The road is located among mountain range Himalayas and has a duration of approximately 500 km. It was built by the Indian army and passes through some of the highest mountain passes in the world, reaching 4850 m. It is considered one of the most difficult in the world due to frequent snowfalls, landslides and difficult landscapes.

15. Egypt - Luxor-al-Hurghada highway

Speaking about the most dangerous roads in the world, one cannot fail to mention the familiar road from Hurghada to Luxor. There are no cliffs, there are no landslides or floods, and the road surface is quite good condition. The main danger on this highway is terrorism and banditry. Tourists were often robbed and kidnapped. That is why this tourist route is always accompanied by the military.

16. Japan - Eshima Ohashi

The road-bridge in Japan completes our review. It is the only road connecting the two cities. Its length is 1.7 km, and the width is 11.3 m. The track is built at such an angle that if you look at it from a distance, the idea of driving to such a height and at such an angle seems unrealistic. And all this so that ships could sail under the road-bridge.
